Scholarships for Study Abroad in Spanish

From the Department of Classical and Modern Languages

The Department of Classical & Modern Languages sponsors several scholarships throughout the year for eligible students of Spanish. Applicants must attach a photocopy of current unofficial transcripts and should have a GPA of 3.0. Application dates and deadlines are announced in class (be sure to ask your instructor for information if you miss the announcement). During the application periods (but not before), application forms can be picked up in the departmental office (Humanities room 332).

The Modern Languages Fund Award (Fall Deadline)
The Classical and Modern Languages Endowment Fund (Application available in the Spring)

The Modern Language Fund Award and the Classical and Modern Languages Endowment Fund are open to full-time graduate and undergraduate students of Spanish and are intended to support travel to and study in countries where Spanish is spoken. Undergraduate students must have completed or enrolled in a 300 level course in Spanish at the time of application. Graduate students must be admitted to the Spanish MA program. Applications for the Modern Language Fund Award become available in the Fall semester. Applications for the Classical and Modern Languages Endowment Fund become available in the Spring semester. The Richard B. and Constance L. Lewis Educational Scholarship

Spring deadline: March 1

The Richard B. and Constance L. Lewis Educational Scholarship is open to full-time graduate and undergraduate and is intended to cover educational expenses, including study abroad. Students must demonstrate financial need in order to be considered for the award. Undergraduate students must have been admitted to the Spanish major or minor before application. The College of Arts and Sciences administers the Richard and Constance Lewis Scholars Program in Latin American Studies for students. Funded by the Richard and Constance Lewis Fund for Latin American and Iberian Studies, this program funds to support student study and/or research abroad in Latin America, Spain and Portugal. World Scholars Program

Deadline Fall for next year travel

The World Scholars Program, funded by the College of Arts and Sciences and the University Provost’s Office, will provide four undergraduate students with up to $5000 of funding to support participation in a semester or year of study abroad in a country or region of the world where English is not widely spoken. Students must be near-fluent or actively committed to achieving fluency in the language of that country or region. They must also be declared majors in any undergraduate discipline that is NOT foreign language, and endeavor, to the degree possible, to study the material of that discipline while abroad (whether through full-immersion coursework, service learning, an internship, etc.). For example, a Sociology major might take coursework in Sociology at the Université de Montréal in full immersion with French Canadian students; or an Anthropology major might engage in fieldwork in São Paulo that requires active use of Portuguese. Benjamin Gilman International Scholarship Program

Deadline for Spring travel: September of previous year

The Gilman International Scholarship Program offers a competition for awards for undergraduate study abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at a 2-year or 4-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide.
